Please join the peaceful protectors in supporting Muslim Texas Capitol Day, Tuesday, January 31, from 9 a.m.-noon, at the Texas State Capitol.
This is the day when around 700 Muslims gather at the Capitol for lobbying purposes — a tradition that has been happening for 23 years. Our job will be to create a human chain around the lobbyists and make sure that the press conference from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. happens with the least amount of disruption.
Two years ago, a protester was able to cross through those gathered and take over the mic. This year, there have been a lot of threats over social media and this Thursday, Jan. 26, State Rep. Kyle Biedermann held a Radical Islamic Terrorism Summit at the Capitol where Muslim Capitol Day was targeted.
We hope that our wall will keep lobbyists who have come to exercise their civic duty safe. Let’s let Texas and the rest of the U.S. know that intimidation and bigotry has no place in our democracy.
We will be joined by faith leaders from the Jewish and Christian communities and Democratic legislators.
A short orientation on deescalation methods will be presented by experts from 9-9:30 a.m., so please be there on time.
Attire and what to bring
We ask that you refrain from bringing signs or wearing clothing with political messages. We are there only to protect our Muslim neighbors, do not engage with possible protesters. Also do not wear clothing that can be grabbed (no shawls, tassels, earrings, necklaces, etc) and make sure to have shoes that cover your toes so that no one steps on them. Also make sure to bring plenty of water.
How to join
Please email Joe Forbes at: muslimswelcomecentraltx@gmail.com and let us know that you are coming. You will then be added to a running list.
