AUSTIN –Friends and family will celebrate the life of beloved Austin journalist and activist, Akwasi Evans, this Sunday, June 23, 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard.
Evans was a steadfast voice and champion for East Austin with his newspaper, NOKOA: The Observer.
There will be live music by award-winning hip-hop duo, Riders Against the Storm (RAS), Harold McMillan and Friends, and Akwasi’s daughter, SHERi Mogul.
SouthPop will hold a pop-up exhibit of Alan Pogue’s photos of Akwasi along with examples of Akwasi’s powerful prose, and there will spoken word from the “Voices of Struggle and Celebration” poets group.
This event was produced by the South Austin Center for Popular Culture (SouthPop) with DiverseArts and Six Square.
The event is open to the public and all are invited to attend.
