AUSTIN – – Austin Jewish Voice for Peace is hosting a talk by Professor Smadar Lavie, author of Wrapped in the Flag of Israel, at Resistencia Bookstore on Sunday, May 24, 2015, from 4-6 p.m. Lavie is a Mizrahi feminist leader, Palestinian-solidarity activist, and scholar. She will speak on Gaza 2014, the recent Israeli elections, and the Israeli Mizrahi predicament.
The Mizrahim are Jews who immigrated to Palestine and then Israel from the Muslim world. They constitute 50 percent of Israel’s citizenry yet suffer systematic discrimination by Israel’s governing elite.
Lavie’s book explores Israel’s intra-Jewish conflict and its impact on the “peace process” between Israel, Palestine, and the Arab world. Bringing the perspective of a feminist of color, she will discuss the complex relationship between Mizrahim, Gaza 2014, and the recent Israeli elections, during which ultra-nationalist parties carried the Mizrahi vote.
Resistencia Bookstore, located at 4926 E. Cesar Chavez Street, Unit C1, in East Austin, is part of the Red Salmon Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) grassroots cultural arts organization with a 30-year history of working with the indigenous neighborhoods of Austin. The talk is free and open to the public.
